The Ludwigslust-Stadtfriedhof cemetery holds several burial sections containing the graves of victims of World War II.
According to the information made available by the cemetery administration, the graves of Polish citizens can be found in two places. One is Section No. 13 commemorating 181 prisoners of the Wöbbelin sub-camp (kommando) of the Neuengamme concentration camp of various nationalities who died just after the liberation, between 4 May and 30 June 1945, in the local hospitals. It has been possible to identify (their first and last names) 149 persons, at least 22 of whom came from Poland. This site is marked by a monument, erected in 1965, to commemorate the victims. In 2016, this section of the cemetery was revalued and complemented with plaques symbolising the victims, which were arranged into a Prisoner’s Triangle Badge.
The graves of Polish citizens can also be found in the southern part of the cemetery (south of Am Schlachthof Street) - in the burial section containing the last remains of victims of World War II. In the site stands a monument devoted to the victims buried in this part of the cemetery. Their number and countries of origin, however, are not fully known. Recent research has revealed that the Ludwigslust cemetery is the final resting place for 88 Polish victims of World War II, whose identities have been confirmed.
