This war graves cemetery, easily distinguishable by its tall tower and chapel, is located on top of Geisberg Hill in close proximity to the village of Brandau. It is the final resting place for 461 World War I and World War II victims, 306 of whom were foreign citizens from 15 different countries, while 147 were German, and 8 of whom remain unidentified. The deceased were Soviet and Yugoslav prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet forced labourers, some of whom died after World War II as well as German soldiers, and civilian victims of air raids. The victims’ graves were moved to this cemetery in the 1960s from 57 communes of the local districts.
The cemetery was established in the 1960s by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V), with the help of the federal and state governments as well as the local towns of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. The opening ceremony took place on 25 September 1966. The cemetery is under the care of the Brandau commune.
