In the main cemetery (Hauptfriedhof) in Kassel, there are three burial sections for war victims - German victims of air bombardments, German soldiers, and foreign citizens - forced labourers and prisoners of war (283 persons). During World War II, almost 23,000 forced labourers from all over Europe worked in Kassel. Most came from Poland and the USSR. A great number of victims died as a result of exhaustion, disease and hunger. Between 1940 and 1945, at least 155 Polish citizens died there. The graves of most of them were later moved to burial section No. 20.
