The Cemetery of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established just after the war. This is the final resting place for 2,936 persons, 93 of whom are unidentified victims of World War II. The majority were aircrew from the Royal Air Force who were shot down in Bavaria, Württemberg , Hesse, Thuringia and Austria. After the war, their graves were transferred to Dürnbach. The remaining graves are the graves of prisoners of war that were killed in escape attempts or died after the liberation.
The cemetery holds the graves of 2,020 soldiers from Great Britain, 484 from Canada, 281 from Australia, 70 from New Zealand, 30 from South Africa, 41 from India, 3 from East Africa, 1 from France, 1 from Norway, 1 from the Soviet Union, 4 from the USA, 4 unknown and 20 from Poland - pilots and aircrew from the Polish RAF squadrons.
