Friedhof Genthin Altenplathow

Cemetery description

The Genthin-Altenplathow cemetery is the final resting place for those who died or were murdered as forced labourers of the Silva-Werke factory in Genthin-Wald, as prisoners of a sub-camp of the Ravensbrück concentration camp, and as forced labourers from all over the Genthin district. In total, 70 or 71 persons are buried here, including children. On the left side, next to the entrance from Hasenholztrifft Street, there used to be a memorial established between 1946 and 1947. It was surrounded by a metal fence (today, the site is surrounded by a wall) behind which were several headstones. Nowadays, in the centre of the site stands a concrete platform that, until the 1970s, was marked by a 4,5-metre-tall obelisk with a Red Star upon it. The plinth was also marked by bronze plaques that bore the names of the deceased. Now, the site and the cemetery lack any information about the victims or their names.
