Cmentarz Brieske Ost

Cemetery description

In the workers’ housing estate called the ‘Marga Garden Town’ (Gartenstadt), which is part of the district of the city of Senftenberg, and right next to the church, there is the Evangelical Cemetery. This holds a war graves burial section for foreign citizens.
The site can be found in the back south-western part of the cemetery. The centre of this oblong structure, with no separate graves, is marked by an erratic boulder that bears a granite plaque and an inscription - a quotation by the late German President Roman Herzog that says:
‘Memory cannot end.’
Roman Herzog
‘In memory of the victims of World War II, 25 September 2013.’
There is no personal data nor information on the number of the deceased buried or their country of origin. The available archival materials have made it possible to establish that this is the final resting place for 34 foreigners - 7 Poles and 27 Soviets. The majority were forced labourers deported to the Third Reich and employed in the Ilse Bergbau AG mine in Marga.
The state of the memorial is very good. However, the lack of more detailed information about those buried here or their personal data makes this place obscure to visitors.
