In the cemetery in Köthen, located in Maxdorfer Street, there are 2 war graves burial sections that are the final resting place for hundreds of victims of World War II.
Between Sections Nos. F16 and F27/28, to the left of the entrance in Maxdorfer Street, is the so-called ‘Honorary Soviet Cemetery’ that consists of two parallel burial sections holding numerous graves that are marked by horizontally placed granite headstones. Among the 218 war victims that were buried here are citizens of Poland, the USSR and Czechoslovakia that died between 1942 and 1948.
The other burial site for victims of World War II is located between Sections Nos. B VI and B VII. This is the final resting place for 361 victims of various nationalities - 247 soldiers, 36 civilians, 11 citizens from different countries and 25 unidentified persons. It cannot be excluded that among these are Polish citizens.
The Honorary Cemetery was rebuilt in 2008. However, the inscriptions on the headstones are in poor condition.
